Macintosh Network Setup Guide

This document will help you get your Macintosh or Macintosh-compatible computer connected to ResNet.

I. Requirements

  1. Hardware
    1. Your Mac must have an ethernet adapter. Depending on the particular model of Macintosh you have, it may be built in.

All recent Macintosh computers (such as G3, iMac, iBook, G4, G4 Cube and Powerbook) have built-in Ethernet ports. Older Macintosh computers, and some Macintosh clones, may require an Ethernet card.

To see if your computer is equipped with ethernet, look on the back of your computer for a port labeled with a picture that looks something like this. If you find a port labeled like that, check to see if it looks like a fat phone jack.

If you cannot find a port like that, then you may need to talk to Apple's Technical Support to see about getting an ethernet card for your Macintosh.

    2. Locate the network cable in your room. All rooms should be equipped with cables that are plugged into the network port. (All ports are checked each summer to ensure activity.)

  2. Minimum Software
    1. MacOS 8.5 (Older versions will work but are not supported)

  3. Recommended Software
    1. MacOS 9.0 or better (Classic) or MacOS 10.0.4

II. MacOS 8.5-9.x Setup for Ethernet Connection

Step 1
To open the TCP/IP control window select Control Panels from the Apple Menu and then select TCP/IP.

Step 2
In the TCP/IP window make sure that Ethernet is selected under the Connect Via option. If Ethernet is not the selected option click on the menu and select it.

Step 3
Also in the TCP/IP window, ensure Using DHCP Server is the chosen option in the Configure menu. If it is not, click on the menu and select it.

Step 4
Quit out of TCP/IP. You will be prompted with a save window. Click Yes.

Step 5
Run your WWW browser to verify connection

III. MacOS X Setup for Ethernet Connection

Step 1
Open System Preferences (Dock: System Preferences). Click on the Network icon

Step 2
Next to Show: select "Built-in Ethernet"

Step 3
Below this, next to Configure, select "Using DHCP"

Step 4
Click Apply Now. Go to "System Preferences: Quit" or hit Apple Q

Step 5
Run your WWW browser to verify connection

Not working? Try Troubleshooting

How do I know if I'm connected to ResNet?

Once the network card is installed and verified that it is installed properly, launch a web browser which should direct you to the ResNet Welcome Screen. You have to logon and your system must be verified before you can use the Internet. If you cannot access the ResNet Welcome Screen, you may not have a completed Ethernet connection. This could be caused by:
  • your adapter not being properly configured
  • your software not being properly configured
  • your Ethernet adapter not being connected to the proper data outlet with a working Ethernet cable
  • your wall jack (data port) not working correctly. (All ports are tested every summer to ensure activity.)

If you have difficulty getting your computer configured, you can check with a friend or floormate for assistance. You can also try the Troubleshooting steps.
