ResNet Checklist

Step 1
Obtain your network account information. You can get these at the Orientation for all new students. All network access from the Residence Halls require a valid MHC network account.

Step 2
Locate the network port in your room. The network port is located on a wall and is covered in a plastic plate. There are network ports and phone ports in each room. Network ports are normally marked with a 'D' or the jack has 'DATA' on it. If your ports are not marked try each one until you find one that works. There is one network port for each individual assigned to a room. If you do not have a cable, contact the MHC Book Store. The Book Store has cables and network cards for purchase or you may purchase them from a retail store.

If your network or phone jacks are damaged report this to Student Housing at once.

You must have a Ethernet CAT5 patch cable to connect your computer's network card to the wall jack. Do not use a phone cable. It will fit into the jack but it will not work. See the hardware installation guide for more information.

Step 3
Setup your computer hardware and software for ResNet. Instructions are available for:

Windows Vista
Windows XP
Windows 98/Me
Windows 2000
Mac OS
Linux

If you have any problems in setting up your computer, the following troubleshooting guides help you to diagnose the problem:

Windows Vista (coming soon)
Windows XP
Windows 98/Me
Windows 2000
Mac OS
Linux

Step 4
Reboot your computer and launch your Internet browser. If your system is configured correctly you will be automatically redirected to the ResNet logon page. Enter your network username and password to logon to ResNet. If you are running a Windows Operation System your machine will be required to install a Policy Key and your system will be checked for Anti-Virus software, no P2P programs and AntiSpyware installed. If you pass these tests then you will have internet access otherwise internet access will be blocked until your system meets the necessary requirements. Click here for more information on this procedure.

This procedure will be more successful if your system complies with MHC policies before you install the Policy Key. If you are running a Windows system you may speed the process up by following these guidelines:

  • Have Anti-Virus software installed, running and current virus definitions.
  • Remove or disable all P2P software.
  • Install Microsoft AntiSpyWare.
  • Scan your system for virus infections and spyware and clean any problems.

MHC provides Anti-Virus software and Microsoft AntiSpyWare if you do not already have these applications  Click here to to to the download page.

Step 5
If you have any trouble getting things to work, check the links under Setup and Troubleshooting.
