Mars Hill
College Residential Network
All Residence Halls
on campus are connected to the MHC network via a high speed fiber
optic backbone. Each room has a network 'port per pillow' installed.
Students that have
their own computer systems with a properly configured Ethernet card
may connect to the MHC network for full time internet access. Ethernet
kits are for sale in the MHC Bookstore or you may purchase your own
from a retail store of your choice.
We have instruction
sheets detailing how
to connect your computer to the MHC Residential Network. The ResNet
Help and Troubleshooting pages have instructions and tips for each
operating system.
Windows Vista
will connect to the MHC residential network but there are currently
no instruction sheets for this operating system.

Help and Troubleshooting
If you have problems
connecting to the network the MHC ITS department will verify the
network port in your room is working. Beyond that ITS will
only provide limited telephone support for basic network
connectivity if needed. The ITS staff will not work on a student
owned computer.
When attaching to the
MHC network from your residence hall you are bound by the same
policies and
computer code of conduct
as your are when using a college owned computer system.
In addition, students
connecting to the MHC network must:
-
Have a valid MHC
Network Account
-
Disable all P2P file
sharing applications
-
Install
a supported anti-spyware application such as
Windows
Defender
-
Have up-to-date
virus scanning software.
-
Install all security
patches and updates for your system
Important :
Peer2Peer file
sharing applications are not allowed on any computer system connected
to the MHC network.
Console Gaming systems may or may not work on the MHC network. ITS
will not support these systems in any way.
Wireless Access points are prohibited in the Residence Halls. Any
Wireless Access Points detected will be disabled.
A computer system
that is in violation of any Mars Hill College Computer Use Policy will
immediately have internet access disabled.
