Mars Hill
College Student Computing
What you should know about computers and
phones - Fall 2007
A substantial investment by the college ahs been made so that traffic on the dorm network will be significantly improved to better serve our students. Increased bandwidth, new policies, and new equipment and services are being put into place to correct many of the issues related to viruses and other problems on the dorm network.
Following is the new protocol Fall term to connect to Mars Hill College's network:
- Windows 95 is not supported on the MHC network.
- Student with Microsoft Windows Operating System (OS) on their PC is required to have current antivirus software loaded and running so that regular updates against viruses will be loaded onto their computer.
- Student with Microsoft Windows (OS) on their PC is required to have all patches loaded and applied to the OS on their computer.
- Student is required to disable all file/printer sharing.
- Student is required to have Microsoft AntiSpyware installed and running.
- Student must disable Peer2Peer file sharing applications - these are not allowed on any computer system connected to the MHC network.
- A student connecting their computer in the network jack in a dorm room is required to logon with their MHC network account.
- Once connected, the computer is immediately placed into a quarantined area on the network; verification software runs to ensure there is a current subscription to antivirus software, that all current patches to Microsoft Windows OS are applied, and Microsoft AntiSpyware is running.
- When verification has been ascertained, network access will be granted which provides access to the Internet, college Webmail and library services, etc.
- Information is communicated via web pages as to how violations of either situation can be corrected through resources made available on a college file server. If the student has not purchased a current subscription for virus protection, the college is making available a free subscription to AVG Antivirus Software or Microsoft AntiSpyware this year only. Instructions for obtaining and installing AVG or MS AntiSpyware are provided on the IT web page.
The computer will remain in quarantine until this process is successful - no exceptions!
When attaching to the MHC network from your residence hall you are bound by the same policies and computer code of conduct as when using a college owned computer system.
